Match Report - 13 Nov 2011, Maclay Football Club White lost to Aylesbury Athletic Youth

Maclay were down to a bare eleven players against a tough Wendover team. The game was as challenging as I expected it was going to be but every single player gave a great account of themselves.
The first twenty minutes belonged to Maclay, we passed the ball well and Brad and Hoppy controlled the midfield. When we had width in our play Wendover seemed to struggle to find answers. A break away attack and a little confusion gave Wendover their first goal. It wasn’t long before Pats hard work earned him a penalty, a great through ball from Joe let Pat take on four players. He came out on top only to be tripped from behind. Pat made no mistake drilling the ball low into the corner. Just before half time Wendover score a second. I don’t know where the ball came from, or even how it ended up in the net. Half time and we were down 2-1.
The second half was a little scrappier and dominated by midfield ping pong, robust tackling and physical challenges. The third goal came from such an incident as a Wendover player went down in the box. The Ref didn’t hesitate. We were now behind 3-1. Our heads seemed to drop momentarily but for the last ten minutes were again dominated.
The crunch decision came as Pat again hustled himself into a great position only to be tripped in the box again. Penalty, no free kick. The Ref adjudged that it was obstruction, even to the astonishment of the Wendover linesman who had also called the foul. Nothing came of the free kick, however minutes later from a similar position Brad chipped a delightful ball across the box to watch Pat head the ball powerfully in to the corner 3-2, unfortunately we could not quite manage a deserved equaliser.

Disappointing result; however we have decided that is our last loss of the season. We played too well and were worthy of a least a draw. The team spirit was superb in what was a passionate game of football, despite no subs they never gave up.

Man of the match could have gone to a number of players from keeper to centre forward. However for an excellent performance for 80 minutes man of match went to Jack.
