Match Report

Match Report - 09 Dec 2012, Maclay Football Club White drew with Prestwood Colts

On the positive side Sunday football is about team spirit and working together. On the negative its wet, played in a biting windy and some games are played on pitches that a farmer would think twice about putting a herd of cows on.

Anyway, when the ref finally arrived we managed kick off at 25 minutes late. Illness and other commitments had reduced us to 11 players.

This was the clash of the big guns; Prestwood, top of the table and managed by Steve Bateman former Everton player and Slough Town Southern League football coach/manager v Simon Roberts Willersey Primary School u10 right winger.

Prestwood had the advantage in the first half with a strong wind blowing in their favour. Maclay stood firm and went in at half time one nil down. Again (see reports for the last 42 weeks) when we release the ball quickly we have the beating of any team, in the first half we often held on for one or two touches too many.

Not withstanding this our defence and midfield battled to a man and are very difficult to break down.

The second half was a different game. Prestwood dominated for 10 and we controlled the other 35 minutes. Prestwood did not look like getting through our defence, if they did Matt, David and George were quick to tidy up. Jack and Joe were equally quick to distribute the ball. Midfield seemed to come out of ninety percent of the tackles with the ball. Ben and Nat’s pace challenged the Prestwood defenders. Karl and Chris never stopped in the middle. Saif had the beating of the defence on several occasions only to be out done by a bobbling ball on a rutted pitch.

We have grown in strength at corners this year and Saif headed the ball neatly into the goal, a good foot and a half over the line. I knew it was in, the players celebrated, Prestwood knew it was in, Steve knew it was in. The linesman and ref had a different opinion. To their credit the lads just got on with it. A couple of minutes later Pat took a shot from 30 yards out and in the swirling wind the keeper lost control and we had equalised. Karl took another shot from 30 years and hit the cross bar, the pitch favoured Prestwood on a couple of occasions. In the last 30 second Prestwood went one on one and shaved the post, which certainly would not have been a fair result.

Man of the match went to Pat, he threw himself around and won challenge after challenge in the holding midfielder position. In reality another true team performance, the first team to take any points of Prestwood this year. (They were Div 1 last year.)

Well done
