Match Report - 19 Oct 2014, Maclay Football Club 2015 drew with SFG Stone
Maclay dropped two points here but when you consider the narrow, bumpy pitch and the strong wind perhaps the result wasn’t that surprising. The Maclay players fought back well from a two goal deficit and if Ben O’Connor’s 90th minute free kick hadn’t been well saved by the SFG Stone keeper Maclay would have taken all three points.
Stone utilised the strong wind to take the lead from a long ball over the top after only two minutes. Stone kept pushing forward and were rewarded with a second goal from a long throw in the 18th minute. Maclay responded immediately as SAIF HIJJAWI quickly ran forward and made the score 1-2 a minute later. Stone utilised the wind again in the 23rd minute as another long throw resulted in a third goal for the home team.
Maclay then started to play much better and were rewarded when BEVAN GOSLING scored Maclay’s second goal ten minutes before the interval. Unfortunately Seodi and Hanlon were both injured in the latter stages of the first half and were replaced by Roberts and Bevan.
The second half saw a different match as Maclay dominated with the wind behind them. DAN RENNISON scored his first goal for the club in the 55thminute as he cut in from the left wing and slammed the ball past the keeper from outside the box. 3-3 and all to play for.
Maclay pushed hard for the winner but sadly it wouldn’t come. Stone threatened a few times on the break but the game ended in a hard fought draw.
Stone were bottom of the table going into the match but they were much better than a number of teams Maclay have faced this season. DAVID BRYAN pipped Dan Rennison to Man of the Match yet another strong display in the Maclay defence.
