CSL Division 1
Chiltern Chargers 0 (0) v Maclay 3 (1)
Scorers: S Hodja (3 min), D Gavin (65 min) & S Hijjawi (81 min)
Maclay moved three points closer to the CSL 1st Division title with this hard fought match at Hervines Park, Amersham. In all honesty the pitch was unplayable and Maclay did very well to win in the quagmire.
The match started brightly when SALIH HODJA looped a shot over the Chargers’ keeper in the 3rd minute to give the boys in red and yellow stripes an early lead. Maclay made the mistake of trying to play their normal passing game in the first half but the pitch was just too muddy for this to be effective. This meant that there was only one goal in it at the break.
In the second half, Maclay put more pressure on the Chargers and this plus the earlier yellow cards proved costly to the Chargers. Stand-in keeper Bevan Gosling made sure that a Chargers’ forty yard shot stayed out of the net and this warning spurred Maclay on to get the vital second goal.
Mid way through the second half one of the Chiltern players cautioned picked up a second yellow and a dismissal after a late challenge on Adam Cowland. This enabled Yusef Seodi to find more space and time and he started to dominate the midfield in the last half hour as he orchestrated the Maclay attacks.
The pressure paid off when top scorer, DEAN GAVIN punished the Chiltern defence in the 65th minute as he neatly struck the ball in from a Salih Hodja cross to give Maclay the two-goal cushion they needed. SAIF HIJJAWI ended the scoring nine minutes from the end as he finished one of his many left wing runs with a good finish into the far corner.
CONOR O’CONNOR won Man of the Match for his determination and leadership at the heart of the Maclay defence.
