Match Report - 12 Apr 2015, Maclay Football Club 2015 lost to Old Belmont
MACLAY DRAW BLANK IN CUP FINAL DEFEAT
CSL Subsidiary Cup Final at Chesham United F.C.
Old Belmont 1 (1) v Maclay 0 (0)
Despite the fact that they had a squad packed full of firepower, Maclay failed to score for the first time this season and this ultimately resulted in a disappointing one nil cup final defeat. Old Belmont’s game plan worked brilliantly as they snatched a 6th minute lead with a near post header from a corner and then proceeded to shut up shop till the end of the game.
Maclay had the lion’s share of possession throughout the match but came to regret the twenty minute spell before half time when both Dean Gavin and Saif Hijjawi hit the post in quick succession and the Belmont keeper made some good saves. Jack O’Connor also hammered a low, hard shot at goal just before half time but the keeper was equal to it.
Maclay had to make an early change when left back Callum Miles damaged his shoulder five minutes into the match. This necessitated the introduction of Chris Heath at right back and Jack O’Connor moving over to left back. With Dan Rennison, Calum Alexander and Tom Bevan already missing, full back suddenly became a problem for the Maclay team.
Maclay went into the break a goal down but confident that the deficit could be overturned in the second half. Old Belmont continued to defend strongly in the second half and time was beginning to run out when Maclay’s experienced strikers, Ranger and Galvin were replaced by youth team graduates Ashby and Hart. Josh Hart quickly fired in a shot from the left but again the Belmont keeper took care of it. As the clock ticked down to the ninety minute mark Matt Ashby had a couple of opportunities but Belmont closed him down quickly and he had to hurry his shots.
When Saif Hijjawi left the field with a hamstring injury near the end Maclay’s last chance of a breakthrough disappeared. Peter Hay won a header and knocked it across the box in the dying moments but there was no one there to pounce on it. Old Belmont were delighted with their win and who could blame them. Maclay had been strong favourites but as we all know there are no guarantees in football.
Congratulations go to Old Belmont for a good win that keeps CSL trophies being shared around the clubs. Maclay move on to the Invitation Cup quarter final v Magpies 91 Reserves this Sunday at Cow Roast.
