SUCCESFUL SEASON ENDS IN DEFEAT

Sunday 10th May 2015

CSL Invitation Cup Final at Bellingdon

Magpies 91 4 (0) v Maclay 1 (0)

Scorer: Saif Hijjawi (78 min)

This was a game too far for Maclay’s successful first season back in competitive Mens football. The sad thing is, the team had chances to score enough goals to win the game but it just wasn’t to be.

The first half was dominated by refereeing decisions and Maclay felt that they came out on the wrong end of most of them. Top scorer Dean Gavin had a good chance early in the match but screwed his shot wide under pressure from the chasing Magpies defenders. Maclay’s best chance was made for himself by Ian Ranger. Unfortunately the Magpies keeper made a top class save to stop Ranger’s superb left foot shot from the edge of the box hitting the top corner. Maclay keeper Chris Young was called upon to make some crucial saves in the first half as Magpies showed how determined they were to get revenge for their recent Group game defeat to Maclay.

Maclay’s chances of victory were damaged when star striker Matt Ashby had to be substituted at half time as an Achilles tendon injury prevented him from making his usual contribution to the cause. This necessitated a reshuffle that also included taking Saif Hijjawi out of the referee’s line of fire.

Typically Maclay went a goal behind from a corner in the 55th minute and this really changed the match. Maclay conceded a second goal two minutes later as the reshuffled defence were unable to cope with a strong run down the left. Magpies dominated a lot of the play after this and Maclay were forced to introduce the recently injured Conor O’Connor in an attempt to win more of the ball. Despite Magpies dominance Ian Ranger was unlucky when two shots went narrowly over the bar. On another day, those sort of shots would have gone in.

With twenty minutes to go Maclay made a triple substitution, bringing on three 19 year old players in a last ditch effort to rescue the game. This was rewarded in the 78th minute as SAIF HIJJAWI pounced on a cross to score and bring Maclay back into the game. Maclay were resurgent and poured forward in wave after wave looking for the equaliser.

Sadly for Maclay, Magpies hit them on the break and went 3-1 ahead two minutes from the end. Insult was added to injury in stoppage time when another Magpies break saw them score a fourth goal. Maclay were still looking for goals and Conor O’Connor was very unlucky to see his 94th minute header from a corner go just past the post. On another day…

Despite conceding four goals CHRIS YOUNG was undoubtedly Maclay’s Man of the Match as he was finally given the opportunity to show people was a great keeper he is.
