MACLAY BOUNCE BACK AT BELLINGDON
Sunday 13th September 2015
Chesham Sunday League Premier Division at Bellingdon
Misty Moon 1 (0) v Maclay 7 (4)
Scorers: Peter Hay (23 & 39 min pen), Dean Gavin (31 & 45 min), Saif Hijjawi (70 min) & Matt Ashby (77 & 80 min pen)
Eighteen weeks after a successful season ended in another disappointing cup final defeat, Maclay returned to the same venue for the opening league match of the new campaign and produced a performance worthy of any occasion. Maclay had never lost at Bellingdon before that cup final defeat and the fact that their next game was at the same venue was a chance to make amends.
Misty Moon were competitive throughout but Maclay’s combination of creativity and hard work produced a fine result that saw them end the first day of the season at the top of the Chesham Premier Division. There will be many hard and difficult days during the season but this was undoubtedly a day to savour.
Maclay’s young players now have the advantage of a full season in Mens football under their belts and that certainly showed as a very young defence gave nothing away until Misty Moon earned a late penalty. The subsequent goal was scant reward for the persistence and hard work Misty Moon showed throughout the match.
The match was fairly even for the first twenty minutes until the all action PETER HAY hit a low, hard shot to open the scoring in the 23rd minute. Last season’s top scorer DEAN GAVIN was rewarded for chasing down the keeper in the 31st minute as the keeper’s clearance cannoned off him for Maclay’s second goal. Dan Rennison was unlucky not to score at this stage of the game as his perfectly hit right foot shot was headed off the line by a Misty Moon defender with an incredible diving header that must already be a candidate for save of the season.
Maclay really started to play at this point, with the outstanding Matt Ashby a constant danger down the right wing. Ashby was brought down in the box in the 39th minute and PETER HAY despatched the penalty to increase Maclay’s lead. A fine first half performance was crowned right on half time when DEAN GAVIN burst through to hit home a shot from the edge of the box.
Misty Moon played really well after half time, managing to withstand the left wing attacks of Hijjawi and Seodi whilst still attacking when they could. Maclay’s defence were rock solid and gave no ground as they repulsed every attack. Maclay were continuing to go forward at every opportunity and eventually the hard work of SAIF HIJJAWI paid off as he curled in an impressive right foot shot to make the score 5-0 in the 70th minute. MATT ASHBY increased the Maclay lead seven minutes later with a trademark finish inside the box. MATT ASHBY completed the Maclay scoring spree in the 80th minute when he converted a penalty after being brought down as he ran into the box.
Misty Moon earned their late consolation goal seven minutes from the end when they were awarded an 83rd minute penalty after a tussle in the box. Debutant keeper Simon Munro dived to his left but was unable to stop a well taken spot kick.
