Match Report - 04 Oct 2015, Maclay Football Club 2015 lost to Last Post
Sunday 4th October 2015
Chesham Sunday League – League Cup 1st Round at Bellingdon
Last Post 3 (1) v Maclay 2 (0)
Scorer: Peter Hay (52 min pen & 73 min)
Maclay lost this pulsating cup tie to a rightly disputed penalty five minutes from the end. If “That’s football…” was the only answer to Salih Hodja’s “Why?” then the amateur game in England is now following the professional game on the road to Hell.
That being said, this was a great match – fiercely fought by both teams. Maclay’s patched up team contained five players who turned out despite their injuries and they were all magnificent. League Cup holders Last Post certainly knew they had been in a game. The Maclay players were very disappointed with the result but they should recognise that they made everyone involved with the club proud.
The first half was fairly even until Last Post opened the scoring from a free kick in the 39th minute. This was somewhat against the run of play as debutant Brendan Mulchrone and both Hay brothers had come very close to opening the scoring in the first half hour.
Maclay considered themselves unlucky to be a goal down at the break but really came out fighting in the second half and got their reward when a hand ball in the penalty box enabled PETER HAY to level the match in the 52nd minute. Play raged from end to end after that with Maclay’s patched up defence holding firm. In the 73rd minute Man of the Match, PETER HAY powered home a corner to give Maclay the lead but an uncharacteristic Maclay defensive mix up enabled Last Post to equalise two minutes later.
Play was fairly even after that until the late penalty gave holders Last Post the victory.
As in previous weeks, Maclay found that Premier Division teams can play for the full ninety minutes. Last season, Maclay’s 2-1 lead fifteen minutes from the end would have produced a victory – this season nothing can be taken for granted.
MAN OF THE MATCH: PETER HAY
