Match Report - 16 Jan 2011, Maclay Football Club White beat Maclay Blue
A very tight game, played in a good sprit. Maclay White started well but with James Rear in goal for the Blues it was always going to be difficult. The Blues took an early lead with a good goal from Dan Wright. The was followed by an excellent strike from Ben O’Connor striking the ball into the bottom corner, giving the stand in goalkeeper Ethan no chance. Two up and someone had clearly not read the script. The Whites continued to play good football and the best move of the game down the left from Dominic saw the ball go to Ben who tapped in. Half time and 2-1.
The second half started sharply with an excellent ball from Karl to Ben who stuck the ball sweetly into the corner. 2-2 and all to play for with the wind slightly in our favour. Maclay White began to take control. Ryan and Ben O’Connor still showed that the Blues were in it and with Billy up front a goal could come at anytime. Maclay White pressed. James made a superb save from Karl, tipping it over the cross bar. Moves came regularly from the right as Ethan and Ben linked well. A disallowed goal from Dom for 'offside' saw the score remain at 2-2. The third goal came after several near misses, with Dominic’s best goal of the season and one that deserved to win such a good game, with a rocket into the left top corner, giving James no opportunity. It wasn't all over yet. The Blues broke through one on one and Josh Roberts slid in to take the ball off the toes of the striker as he went to kick. Stamina told in the end and the Whites took a narrow victory 3-2.
Thanks to Ethan and Alex for stepping up to the mark and going in goal. William will be out for 6 weeks with a broken arm and I think we will all have to take a turn (if over 5'00")
Men of the match went to Josh Roberts and Karl who dominated the second half; they fought with passion winning almost everything. Dom and Ben were close seconds with 3 great goals. Only the A team next week. We are one step from Wembley, or at least a council pitch in Hemel Hempstead.
