Match Report

Match Report - 18 Sep 2011, Maclay Football Club White beat Delaford Colts

What a great start to the season and a superb effort from all of the players. Delaford Colts were unbeaten last season and when they arrived I was concerned we were going to be in for a tough time.
Maclay were down to 12 players as we await newly registered players, fitness was going to tell.
We started the better of the two teams with Josh Roberts winning most tackles and distributing the ball around the pitch. Dom Prince started in the middle and ran himself ragged in the first 25 minutes. We had dominated but no goal. Josh Wilton came on after 25 minutes and his first touch was a delicate flick to Pat Hanlon who put the ball away neatly. The second goal was out of the manual. Henry Bexson winning the tackle, Ben Rochford switched the play wide to the left, Joe McEntee played a decisive ball and Pat Hanlon had his second. Delaford fought back and within a few minutes had scored one back and hit the bar. No chance for the stand in keeper Joey Rennison who had an otherwise faultless performance. Last goal of the half came as one of the defenders attempted to outmuscle Pat Hanlon off the ball. A big error and he could only manhandle Pat to the floor to prevent a certain goal. Josh Roberts struck a neat penalty and in it went. Half time 3 – 1.

Delaford started the second half brightly, sneaking another goal and just missing by a whisker. The intensity of the match increased as the boys tired. Then from our own half Ethan Mackie struck a weighted ball into the path of Henry Bexson who drilled the ball in past the keeper at the near post. 4 – 2 and all to play for. Delaford won a couple of free kicks and things may have been different if their two strikers had remained onside. A disallowed goal making a significant impact upon the game. The game was effectively put to bed with a second well delivered ball into the path of Pat Hanlon from Ethan Mackie. No mistake and Pat Hanlon shrugged off the challenges to win the game.

An outstanding performance from all. The defence looked solid, Joey Rennison in goal with David Bryan and Stan Critchfield winning almost every header. Jack O'Connor looked very comfortable and played with immense confidence. Ethan Mackie played extremely well setting up two goals. Ben Rochford and Joe McEntee worked tirelessly on the wings. Henry Bexson, Josh Roberts and Dom Prince can claim a seventy percent dominance of the midfield. Josh Wilton and Pat Hanlon looked impressive upfront. With only one sub there was nowhere to hide and everyone contributed.

Man of the match could have gone to half a dozen players, but Josh Roberts had such a dominating first half he nicked it just in front of Pat Hanlon.
