Match Report - 23 Sep 2012, Maclay Football Club White beat Taplow United Youth Colts
Following an hour of constant, driving rain, moaning from the sidelines, dismal play, a sending off and no goals we finally arrived at Taplow and turned off the car radio. A team talk in Dutch and the boys went out on to the pitch somewhat confused but up beat.
The boys' spirits were lifted inside 10 minutes when Josh took one of his 35 yard shots that clipped in off the underside of the crossbar. Taplow did not learn their lesson as his second shot, this time from 30 did exactly the same. Maclay and Taplow played some good football in tough conditions. The Maclay defence with Ethan, Jack, David, Matt and George in goal looked impenetrable. Jack then got in on the action (probably with a broken toe) with another 35 yard shot. This time it dipped and skidded into the bottom corner. The half was end with Pat following up his flicked header to tap in as the keeper parried his effort.
The second half was to be a different game, with the wind and on Taplow's side. Firstly a strongly disputed penalty followed by a potentially offside goal when the referee overruled the linesman saw the score at 4-2. Taplow's heads were up but the magnificent defence stood up to Taplow, now aided by Joe and Karl. Debutant Saif then put the game beyond the reach of Taplow, scoring with a one on one with the keeper. He had tormented Taplow all afternoon with his pace and skill. Maclay ran out 5 - 2 victors. A genuinely great team performance. Man of the match could have gone to several players, Josh, George, David, Jack and Saif however the outstanding player on the pitch was Matt he never gave up, won challenge after challenge, broke the play up and distributed the ball. Well done.
