Match Report - 16 Feb 2014, Maclay Football Club Red beat Bourne End Youth
A Maclay team missing five key players made very hard work of this match and only a 93rd minute ADAM COWLAND penalty and a 124th minute winner from Man of the Match JACK WIGGS saved their blushes and ensured a safe passage into the B&B FA County Cup quarter final for the second season in a row.
Bourne End unfortunately turned up with only 9 players but boy did those 9 players work hard! They took the lead after 8 minutes before top scorer MATT ASHBY equalised 6 minutes later. A misplaced pass in midfield enabled Bourne End to run through and take a 2-1 lead after 25 minutes which they held until the break. Bourne End took a two goal lead in the 58th minute from a corner and at that point it looked like it was going to be their day. All the famous Maclay never say die spirit was needed after that. JACK WIGGS made it 2-3 in the 76th minutes with a well taken goal and gave the team some hope. The hard work was rewarded in the 93rd minute when ADAM COWLAND coolly slotted home the equaliser from the penalty spot after the effervescent Josh Hart had been pushed over just inside the penalty box.
Maclay proceeded to completely dominate the first half of extra time but just couldn't score the goal that would have ended the tie. As the second half of extra time wore on the 9 weeks without a match was really telling on all the players as the game fizzled out towards a penalty shoot out. Just when it looked all over JACK WIGGS popped up with the vital winning goal in the 124th minute. What a strange match. It took Maclay 124 minutes to beat the hard working, impressive and unlucky Bourne End team but in cup football it's the result that counts.
