Another strong, attacking performance took Maclay to the top of the Chesham Sunday League 1st Division for the first time.
Maclay centre forward DEAN GAVIN opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he headed in strongly from a left wing cross. Saif Hijjawi’s free kick was headed into the net by an Old Belmont defender 6 minutes later just as Gavin was about to get to it. Old Belmont responded well and brought themselves back into the game three minutes later with a well taken goal. Maclay continued to push forward and were rewarded with a third goal in the 38th minute when PAT HANLON pounced on Ben O’Connor’s free kick to knock the rebound into the net.
Maclay started the second half really well and forced another Old Belmont o.g. in the 55th minute when the returning Rob Prunty’s cross was knocked into the Belmont goal.
The match was evenly fought for the next twenty minutes until Maclay killed the game off with three goals in three minutes. DAN RENNISON scored with a left foot shot from the edge of the box in the 80th minute, followed by PAT HANLON’s great diving header after the keeper made an impressive save from Josh Roberts’ lob. The marauding ROB PRUNTY added the seventh goal with a good finish a minute later after a trademark run through on goal.
Maclay also managed to miss two penalties in the latter stages of the game as the keeper made good saves from Pat Hanlon and Jack O’Connor. Last season’s regular penalty taker, Adam Cowland - watching from the sidelines, probably realised he should have made himself available for this match.
DAVID BRYAN won Man of the Match for another strong performance alongside Ben O’Connor at the heart of the Maclay defence.
Maclay move on to a home match v Trix from High Wycombe in the third round of the Berks & Bucks County Cup this week, enabling Pioneer to regain top spot if they win at Stone. The Maclay v Pioneer league match at Cow Roast on 23rd November should be interesting.
