Match Report - 30 Nov 2014, Maclay Football Club 2015 beat Chesham Athletic
CSL Subsidiary Cup Quarter Final
Chesham Athletic 1 (0) v Maclay 3 (2)
Scorers: J Rochford (39min), D Gavin (42min) & B Gosling (67min)
This was the match when Maclay’s experienced summer signings, Conor O’Connor and Dean Gavin really demonstrated their worth to the team. Gavin led the line superbly from start to finish while O’Connor won challenge after challenge at the back. Maclay hadn’t played on Chesham Moor since a Chesham Charity Cup semi final match twenty years before and unfortunately the pitch hadn’t improved at all. This meant that the aerial power of O’Connor and Gavin was needed as the ball was in the air more than usual.
Chesham started the game with real purpose, making sure that the Maclay players knew that they would have to work hard if they were going to win this game. Maclay struggled to find form on the muddy pitch in the first half hour until Saif Hijjawi sprang to life and started to take the game to Athletic. The addition of the lightning fast Rochford brothers was proving invaluable and the alert JOE ROCHFORD pounced on the ball in the 39th minute to give Maclay the lead.
This was followed three minutes later when DEAN GAVIN added a second goal with a good finish from a tight angle. Maclay really started to fire on all cylinders after the second goal and were very unlucky not to add a couple more.
Just as Maclay bemoaned yet another missed opportunity, Chesham came up the pitch and were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute when the ball struck Conor O’Connor. Man of the Match PAT HANLON showed just why he is so highly rated as a goalkeeper by diving to his right to save the penalty. Maclay surged forward after this and BEVAN GOSLING scored his third goal in three games in the 67th minute when he neatly side footed the ball in for Maclay’s third goal.
Maclay continued to attack and could easily have added to their tally. A mixture of poor finishing, bad luck and some good saves from the Athletic keeper stopped that from happening. Chesham Athletic managed to grab a late consolation goal in the 84th minute but the Maclay defence held firm through to the end.
For the third week in a row every one of the Maclay players on duty really did their bit to earn another good win. Pat Hanlon excelled in goal and was rewarded with the Man of the Match award.
