Return To Winning Ways
Sunday 15th February 2015
CSL Division 1
Chesham Athletic 1 (0) v Maclay 2 (2)
Scorers: I Ranger (7 min, pen) & D Gavin (39 min)
Maclay ended their recent disappointing run of results with a solid away win at Chesham Athletic. Maclay took an early lead yet again but the difference between this match and others played during January and February was that a second goal was added before half time.
Maclay looked good from the start and debutants David Hay, Peter Hay and Will Goulding made their presence felt on a heavy pitch. Maclay went a goal ahead when Peter Hay was brought down as he ran into the penalty box in the 7th minute. After a short delay, IAN RANGER knocked the ball in from the penalty spot to give Maclay the lead. Ranger was unlucky not to add a second goal as he narrowly missed the target twice with a header and a shot.
DEAN GAVIN’s willingness to chase seemingly lost causes was rewarded in the 39th minute as he dispossessed the Athletic keeper and added the second goal. The Maclay strikers both looked good as Ian Ranger turned in another master class on how to hold the ball up, lay it off and create chances.
Maclay deserved their two goal lead at the interval and continued to attack after the break. The returning Charlie Phillips showed some neat touches on the left wing but Maclay were unable to add a third goal. As the game wore on injuries to a number of Maclay players enable Athletic to build some momentum. They were rewarded in the 72nd minute when a harsh decision resulted in a free kick outside the box. Chesham neatly scored to reduce the Maclay lead to one goal. The last 20 minutes were characterised by the number of headers, blocks and tackles that the Maclay players won. David Hay and Conor O'Connor held firm at the centre of the Maclay defence and Conor O'Connor won everything that came near him. The reward at the end was a well-earned and much valued three points as Maclay extended their lead at the top of the 1st Division to five points.
BEVAN GOSLING narrowly pipped Ian Ranger and Will Goulding to Man of the Match for his non-stop running and tackling in the centre of midfield.
