Everything clicked into place in this match as Maclay produced their best performance of the season to convincingly beat Premier League leaders Magpies 91.
Maclay ran at Magpies from the start of the match and were rewarded in 5th minute when YUSEF SEODI curled his left wing corner into the net. This stung Magpies into life and they equalised after 13 minutes after a good break through the middle. Dean Gavin was then unlucky to see his headed goal from Salih Hodja’s cross chalked off for offside.
The ever impressive IAN RANGER added a second goal in the 22nd minute as he shot the ball home through a crowd of players. Two minutes later the effervescent SAIF HIJJAWI cut in from the left and added a third. Maclay were really taking the game to Magpies at this point and Dean Gavin was unlucky to see his curling right foot shot cannon off the inside of the post.
After these let offs Magpies worked their way back into the box and were rewarded when Maclay conceded a 39th minute penalty from a corner. Luckily for Maclay the penalty was fired just wide although keeper Chris Young may have got to it if it had been on target.
The action packed first half ended with Maclay 3-1 ahead.
Magpies attached straight after half time and were quickly able to claw back a second goal from a corner. Magpies worked hard in the second half and their competitiveness reduced the number of chances Maclay were able to create. As play swung from end to end Magpies conceded a free kick in their own half. BEN O’CONNOR fired in the 64th minute free kick to restore Maclay’s two goal advantage.
The match raged on for another half hour but in the end Maclay saw the game out to achieve a welcome and well deserved win.
YUSEF SEODI won Man of the Match just ahead of Ben O’Connor. Seodi really took the game to the opposition with his penetrating runs and relished the competitive midfield battle.
