BACK ON TRACK
CSL Invitation Cup Quarter Final at Cow Roast
Maclay 10 (6) v Magpies 91 Reserves 1 (0)
Scorers: Dean Gavin (2, 20 & 25 min), Saif Hijjawi (7 & 43 min), Ian Ranger (39 & 57 min) & Matt Ashby (63, 83 & 88 min)
This was exactly the sort of performance Maclay needed after last week’s disappointing cup final defeat. Maclay immediately settled into their stride as Matt Ashby’s quick throw in to Ian Ranger enabled Ranger to find space and cross early for DEAN GAVIN to neatly open the scoring. 1-0 to Maclay after only two minutes. This was a sign of things to come.
Five minutes later SAIF HIJJAWI scored a trademark curling shot from a great Ranger pass to make it 2-0. This was quickly followed by two more goals from DEAN GAVIN as first Ranger and then Hijjawi created goal scoring chances for Gavin to convert in deadly fashion. Maclay were completely controlling the match at this point as their passing game really hit top gear.
IAN RANGER made it 5-0 after 35 minutes as he brought the ball down and scored from Matt Ashby’s pass. SAIF HIJJAWI added a sixth goal two minutes before half time as he slalomed between defenders on the edge of the box and fired home to make the score 6-0 at the break.
The game calmed down a bit after half time and Magpies’ keeper scored a good goal from a corner in the 49th minute - bringing a smile to nearly everyone’s face. He should be congratulated for having total faith in his own ability to come up the pitch and grab a goal for his team.
Maclay kept the pressure on and this brought IAN RANGER a second goal as he hit a shot across the goal into the far corner. Top scorer Dean Gavin took a well-deserved break at this point which enabled MATT ASHBY to move from right wing to striker. As the watching faithful expected, Ashby proceeded to punish the Magpies’ defence three times before the end of the match. In the 63rd minute he latched onto a good through ball from Bevan Gosling to run through and score. This was followed by an 83rd minute curling shot to make the score 9-1 before he completed the scoring with a far post header from a superb James Rear cross two minutes from the end.
On a day when everyone played really well, Ian Ranger won Man of the Match. Ranger’s first half performance when he set up three goals and then scored one himself just edged him ahead of Matt Ashby for the prize. Dean Gavin and Saif Hijjawi also starred as the team hit ten.
