MACLAY END LEAGUE CAMPAIGN IN STYLE

Maclay hit double figures for the second week in a row as the team continued to punish their opponents for the cup final blank v Old Belmont. This was very much the Matt Ashby show as he tortured Pioneer for most of the match, scoring five goals and setting up two more.
Pioneer started the match really well and were disappointed when DEAN GAVIN opened the scoring for Maclay on the 15 minute mark after a neat 1:2 with Ian Ranger. MATT ASHBY and PETER HAY proceeded to add goals in the next five minutes as Maclay swept into a three nil lead.
Pioneer rallied and brought themselves back into the game when they scored a superb free kick after 29 minutes. The game was fairly even at this stage until MATT ASHBY pounced on Ian Ranger’s knock down to make it 4-1 after 36 minutes. Pioneer persevered and scored a second goal three minutes later after a good run down the left wing. Unfortunately for Pioneer, Ashby and Cowland ruthlessly punished them two minutes later when they combined for ADAM COWLAND to make the score 5-2 after 41 minutes.
The first twenty minutes of the second half saw Maclay well and truly put the game to bed as they scored 5 goals in 14 minutes. MATT ASHBY pounced on Dean Gavin’s knock down in the 51st minute to give Maclay a four goal lead. Two minutes later Ashby returned the favour as he squared the ball for DEAN GAVIN to score his 21st goal of the season. A goal mouth scramble two minutes later saw IAN RANGER add to the goals and then PAT HANLON crashed the ball home from 25 yards to make the score 9-2. This golden five goal spree ended in the 65th minute when MATT ASHBY cut in from the right to score again. Man of the Match, MATT ASHBY finished the scoring in the 80th minute when he also scored his 21st goal of the season as he tapped in Dean Gavin’s cross to make the final score 11-2.
All in all, this was the best possible way to end Maclay’s title winning league campaign. The team will now focus on next Sunday’s CSL Invitation Cup Semi Final v Tring Anchor.
