Match Report - 18 Oct 2015, Maclay Football Club 2015 lost to Magpies 91
Sunday 18th October 2015
Chesham Sunday League Premier Division at Westwood Park, Little Chalfont
Magpies 91 1 (0) v Maclay 0 (0)
Maclay’s patched up team did well to narrowly lose to one of the division’s leading clubs. That being said Maclay had a couple of good chances in the second half that could have given them at least a point.
An impressive Magpies team had the ball most of the time in this match, meaning that Maclay’s defence and midfield had to work very hard to close them down and prevent possession turning into goal attempts. If the Hay brothers, Chris Young and Dan Rennison hadn’t performed heroics for ninety plus minutes it would have been a heavy defeat.
On the odd occasion when Magpies did break through, their wayward shooting or Chris Young’s wiry frame prevented the ball hitting the net. The one goal Magpies did score in the 55th minute was worthy of winning any match as a well hit cross from the left was met by the head of a Magpies player running into the box from deep.
Simon Davis hit the post after a goal mouth scramble in the 72nd minute and James Manners had half a chance on the edge of the box near the end but that was about it from a Maclay attacking perspective.
Thanks go out to the ill, injured, and semi-retired and Kent or Birmingham based players who turned out for this match. If they hadn’t made the effort Maclay who would have had to cancel the match – resulting in a sizeable fine and a points deduction. Pat Hanlon’s sterling efforts when called up to become an emergency right back summed up the team’s spirit on a day when all the players on duty performed heroics.
There’s no game this week, enabling some of the niggly injuries to clear up. Reinforcements are urgently needed for Maclay’s next match v Wycombe Town on Sunday 1st November. At least it’s a home match for once. With five of the first six matches being played away from home, and three on pitches with awful slopes, a return to the luxury of the club’s billiard table flat pitch at Cow Roast will be most welcome.
